An environmentally friendly, accurate method for measuring formula and fortification products in the NICU.
Features and Benefits:
From the inventor of the NeoSpoon:
We have not created any recommendation for how long the NeoSpoon could be re-used or if it should be re-used at all. I think this question can only be answered by reviewing your hospital policy and having a conversation with your dietary and/or infection control department about your practice and how you plan to use the measuring spoons.
The safest practice would be to discard the spoon after each use, but since your current practice is to re-use your measuring spoons for an established time, then the NeoSpoon would simply be an Eco-friendly disposable option to replace or supplement your current supply.
I think other variables in your preparation process such as how often you are accessing the canister, how many people are sharing the canister, etc. must also be considered in order to make a final decision about your unit’s best practice.
Sterilization is not necessary between uses unless required by your policy but the NeoSpoon would support your preparation of supplements as a ‘clean procedure’. Also the spoon is not sterile prior to opening the package.
The NeoSpoon measurements have been engineered for accuracy and are pending validation.
The NeoSpoon has two different size spoons, 1/8 teaspoon on one end and ½ teaspoon on the other. To portion out different amounts you can use either end more than once or in combination. For example:
Yes. The NeoSpoon is biodegradable and can safely be added to your hospital’s other organic waste.
Yes. The NeoSpoon is classified as a “#7” plastic and can be recycled.
The NeoSpoon can be used to measure any product used in your NICU, such as powdered or liquid human milk fortifiers, modular nutritional products ( protein, carbohydrates, or fat) and for fortifying breast milk with powdered infant formula in preparation for discharge.
The NeoSpoon is made from biodegradable corn-based polymer materials.
Although the NeoSpoon looks sturdy it is made from biodegradable materials that will may not tolerate multiple washing or the heat of sterilization.
The NeoSpoon is a designed for single use but in collaboration with your infection control department you can create a policy to determine if the NeoSpoon may be reused and for what duration.
