Recognized during National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Neotech was proud to receive two Certificates of Recognition for employing people with disabilities. One from the California State Assembly and one from the California State Senate.

The company and two of its team members were honored during the Santa Clarita Valley Mayor’s Committee Luncheon in October. Mayor, Jason Gibbs, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the special gathering celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Neotech President, Craig McCrary, and Product Assembler, Nick Abrahms, were invited to serve on the panel of employers and their employees with disabilities. Guests, who paid to attend, asked business questions of the panel.

When asked by one guest, “what is your dream job?” Abrahms pointed to McCrary and replied, “my dream job is to have his job,” which drew laughs and applause from the audience. He graciously added, “but not until he retires.”

Abrahms and McCrary were also awarded Certificates of Recognition.

Neotech often teams with local organizations that have work programs for people with disabilities. Nick Abrahms is a full-time employee who was hired on through Pleasantview Industries Inc. via their workplace program. He celebrated his 16th year of employment at Neotech in 2023. Neotech also employs Sarah, a part-time team member with Down Syndrome, who also came from Pleasantview.

Additionally, Neotech has a team from Desert Haven Enterprises. The crew consist of four team members with developmental disabilities and one job coach. They work part time and contribute daily to assembly and packaging tasks. The team technically works for a different organization, but they are every bit Team Neotech.

Neotech is an equal opportunity employer and employees with disabilities have long been part of the culture. They enrich our team and add lot of smiles to the building. We’re incredibly happy to have them as part of our workforce.

Making a Difference with Simple, Innovative Products

Anyone who’s knows Neotech knows we love reasons to celebrate. And 35 years seems like a pretty good reason.

Our dedicated team members have been Making a Difference for 35 years! That’s 35 years of developing and manufacturing innovative medical devices. Thirty-five years of helping babies, children, and their caregivers. Thirty-five years of distributing millions of products all over the world. Not to mention 35 years of celebrations.

“I think I am most proud of the impact we’ve made as a company over the last 35 years,” said Craig McCrary, Neotech President. “Impact to employees, impact to clinicians, and impact to patients and parents. We’ve done things that have made a positive difference in many lives around the globe.”

Craig, who has been with Neotech for over 30 years, credits company success to simple, unique products that are clinician-driven and fill a need.

“Made in the U.S.A. has truly set us apart,” Craig adds. “Especially this past year (2021), when so many companies have experienced supply chain issues. Our products are in stock and ready to ship.”

Winning Team

Our employees are the heartbeat of Neotech. The team has grown quite a bit in the last 35 years and their contributions to making a difference are immeasurable. Over 35 years, many faces have come and gone, but we’ve been fortunate to have established a culture of employee longevity. Several team members have been here for more than 10 years.

“When I started at Neotech in November 2007, there were only 16 employees; now we have over 60,” said Nick Abrahms, Product Assembler. Nick has witnessed lots of changes and improvements. “Back in the day, there wasn’t a video jet [printer]; we had to label everything by hand. There were no auto-baggers.”

“Being able to see the growth at Neotech has been very exciting and rewarding,” said Sara Dimmett, Manager of Product Development. “Every day is different. There are new challenges that come up. A shift in whatever you’re doing. It makes each day different and exciting.”

“A lot has changed here at Neotech. Faces. The processes. The systems,” said Laken Tambunting, Warehouse Supervisor. Laken started as a purchasing agent and worked her way up through a few different roles before taking on her current position. “It’s a great company to work for. Lots of relationships get built here. Most importantly, we’re here for the babies; making a difference.”

“It’s been an amazing journey to be a part of,” said Ernie Cavazos, Marketing Manager. “To see the team grow and watch individuals advance within the company. To see the product line expand and evolve. It’s incredibly rewarding when you see pictures of our products in use and hear from clinicians about the difference they make.”

History in the Making

In April 1987, Neotech founders Tom Thornbury, Paul Choksi, and Dr. Arnold Heyman, changed the name of the company from Hospital Concepts, Inc. to Neotech Products, Inc. Today, Dr. Heyman remains a principal owner, along with his son, T.J. Heyman.

We’re proud to be an essential brand in hospitals worldwide. Our unique line of skin friendly products are designed to benefit patients and clinicians alike. As a result, we’ve become a proven leader in the development of neonatal, pediatric, and respiratory products. Products such as the RAM Cannula®, Little Sucker® suction tips, NeoShades® Phototherapy Eye Shields, NeoBar® ET Tube Holder, and many more.

Early on, we made our mark as a neonatal company with our NICU-centric products. But our reach now extends beyond the NICU into pediatrics, children’s oncology, home healthcare, and more. We even offer a few products for adults, like EZCare® trach ties and the NeoSucker® Curved XL suction tip.

Our products can be found in hospitals, clinics, and homes around the world. We continue to expand our international presence by developing simple solutions to medical needs. Neotech is also a proud Certified B Corporation®. Becoming a B Corp is one of many milestones over the course of our history. We plan to hit many more. After all, we didn’t come this far to only come this far.

Indeed, 35 years of Making a Difference feels like a great reason to celebrate. So, bring on the cake!

Life After the NICU Often Includes Home Healthcare

For many families, being discharged from the NICU doesn’t mark the end of the medical challenges brought on by a premature birth.

Many patients go home with continuing healthcare needs. Neotech created a division within the company focused solely on the medical needs of these patients, Neotech Home Health. Neotech’s Home Health sector recognizes the special needs of these patients and their families. It works with parents and their DMEs to deliver the products these children need.

Judy McCrary, Director of Sales & Marketing, is a former Respiratory Therapist who helped found Neotech Home Health. Along with her background as a RT, Judy has also worked for a DME company and is familiar with the questions and objections a DME company may have. She and Home Health Account Manager, Melinda Rivas, approach their work more as advocates for children and their families rather than salespeople. “If you believe in what you’re doing, grand things will happen,” Judy says. “So I don’t have to sell anything. All I do is believe in the products that we have. Then, we work with the parents and work with the DME companies… to carry the products that I believe are the best products for their children.”

Neotech is an Essential Home Health Brand

Judy and Melinda find Social Media to be a great resource to connect with families. They belong to many online support groups for parents of special needs children. There, they listen to parents and offer help when possible. On the Neotech Home Health Facebook page, they have fun making contests for parents to submit pictures or stories. Families are awarded with goodie bags filled with Neotech Products and sometimes a little something for other siblings at home. Judy explains, “We take this on as a family unit. It isn’t just about the patient.” The result is parents who love the products. Next, these parents then take the products back to the hospitals and the hospitals turn around and order the products. The parent’s have become spokesman for Neotech. Thank you parents.

With the support of Neotech behind them, Judy and Melinda have cultivated Neotech Home Health into an essential brand in the home healthcare arena. “Our products are now relatively available through DME suppliers and Home Health Agencies and continue to make a difference in the long-term care of our patients,” Melinda says. “Neotech Home Health continues to evolve by bridging the gap between hospital and home care. We understand a parents’ struggle when it comes to fighting for what their child needs and we want to be there to help. We believe in building relationships.”

She adds, “Our products will sell themselves. Our goal is not to make a sale, but to advocate for parents and caregivers to get what they need to take care of their little ones. Even if it means sending free product to hold parents off while we get their DME supplier on board.”

Making a Difference

I asked Judy why it is important for Home Health to have its own division: “Hospitals are very institutional and home health is a different level… You have to listen and be compassionate and you have to NOT be a salesperson. They are just parents trying to take care of their kids. We are here for them. It’s not about selling anything to them. It’s about caring from them and being an advocate for them.”

Both Judy and Melinda have been personally touched by the families they have helped serve through Neotech Home Health. They have many stories about the children and parents they’ve gotten to know over the years—some of whom they have met in person and witnessed, first-hand, the role Neotech products make in their lives. They are appreciative to know they are Making a Difference in these lives.

If you would like more information on Neotech Home Health, please email Melinda Rivas or call 1-800-966-0500.

Product Development

By Craig McCrary, President

Neotech was founded to help clinicians with product development. To take new products from concept to reality.

In the beginning, we focused on Class I disposables. Back then, it was relatively simple to launch a new product, so long as we adhered to FDA guidelines.

Ah, the good ol‘ days.

As Neotech has grown and continued to evolve, so too, have FDA regulations. And it’s no longer just the FDA. As an international company, we also adhere to ISO standards and the newly developed European Union (EU) Medical Device Regulations (MDR). Additionally, each country outside the U.S. and EU has its own standards and practices. Navigating the product development path is much more involved these days.

Taking an idea and turning it into a tangible product is no small task. In some cases, that item did not exist before we created it. In all cases, we have to take specific, documented steps through the product development process in order to bring a product to market. Working diligently along the way to ensure that we are meeting all standards and regulations.

Typical steps in the process go from concept meetings and design ideas to prototypes of various sizes and options. Often with redesigns and new prototypes mixed in. Eventually, we get to the point of placing a production order. But that doesn’t mean we’re ready to sell.

After production parts are received, there is still critical testing required, such as biocompatibility and shipping tests. Testing that cannot be performed with prototypes. These steps can take months and a significant financial investment. It’s hard to remain patient. In the end, though, we provide a new tool to help clinicians provide the best care to their fragile patients.

Latest Development

Our newest product is the NeoGlo® Disposable Transilluminator. This product idea was brought to us by a brilliant neonatologist in Israel, Dr. Bromiker, who was looking for an affordable, single-patient transilluminator. His idea evolved into the original, battery-operated, reusable NeoGlo that offers four light settings.

After the successful launch of the NeoGlo, it was time to get back into product development and deliver on Dr. Bromiker’s original concept. A single-patient transillumintor that’s powered by a portable USB power source. We are extremely excited to finally launch his vision.

Transilluminators have existed for years, of course, but no other company offers an affordable single-patient option.

Now, Neotech offers two great transillumination options: original reusable or the new NeoGlo Disposable. Both are great alternatives to the Wee-Sight®.

Neotech Products & Wichita State Join Forces

Forging a new partnership to help bring medical products to market!

Neotech Products has entered into a mutually beneficial agreement with Wichita State University. This exciting collaboration will provide Neotech with the resources of an institution well known for advanced research, including clinical work through their partners.

“Wichita State is committed to using our aviation expertise for expanding research in other industries,” said Rick Muma, President of Wichita State University. “As a clinician in internal medicine and infectious diseases and a public health practitioner, I understand the need to continually innovate through collaboration in the healthcare sector. Partnerships with companies like Neotech Products do just that.”

With this partnership, Neotech will have access to advanced facilities and technologies, including:

Labs for materials and adhesive testing and research

Electron microscopes

CT scanning (for materials)

Pull and compression testing

A wide array of 3D printing and scanning

VR visual design space

And more

The partnerships’ first collaboration is a locking mechanism for the NeoBar® ET Tube Holder. The idea originated with Dr. Mohammed Ansari, a neonatologist with ties to the Wichita area. Wichita State teamed up with Dr. Ansari and brought the idea to Neotech to drive the project forward. We’re extremely excited to see where it leads.

Overall, the purpose of the partnership between Neotech and Wichita State is to utilize the combined expertise of both institutions to bring medical products to market that will truly Make a Difference.

NeoBar® the First to Utilize Tree Free Box

Neotech is implementing tree free, sustainable packaging material in order to help offset its footprint.

There’s no getting around it, plastics are pretty important at Neotech. We use them to make life-saving products like NeoBar and RAM Cannula®. The patients who benefit wouldn’t have it any other way.

Despite the need for plastic, we are an environmentally conscious company. We’re always looking for new materials and processes that will help to balance our carbon footprint. Our latest find is sustainable packaging for our product boxes. Otherwise known as Tree-Free™ Paperboard. It is 100% compostable.

Our partners at Weston Graphics introduced us to this innovative material, made from formerly wasted sugarcane by-product. It’s strong and durable, and out-performs recycled products without harming the planet. There are no added chemicals or bleaches.

“As part of our mission, we are dedicated to providing high-quality packaging products that enhance the lives of the people who use them,” Adam Weston, Owner – Weston Graphics said. “With regards to the tree free paper, we wanted to stay in sync with the natural environment “circle,” use the raw material, in this case the sugarcane. These materials have a functional life, they are the embodiment of recycling.

“Many companies are aware of the word sustainable,” Weston said. “It’s the new green. But sustainability goes way deeper than having a recyclable box or container. Companies, including B Corps™ like Neotech, are very aware of the impact of using non-sustainable packaging to our landfills. Companies are choosing to use products like the Tree Free material instead. It is recyclable and compostable. More important is that the use of these products reduces their carbon footprint overall.”

Moving Forward

A few members of Team Neotech took a field trip to see the NeoBar boxes come off the press. While we were there, we saw pallets of tree free boxes for industries such as medical, beauty, and food. It was reassuring to see that we are part of a larger movement towards sustainable packaging.

NeoBar is the first product line to use this new material, but it certainly won’t be the last. And as always, all of our boxes will continue to be printed with soy ink. Which is better for the environment.

NICU Hits Close to Home

By Neil Ceniza, Director of Operations

I got to witness our products Making a Difference for my son in the NICU.

Everything related to our pregnancy was moving along perfectly. My wife, Maureen, experienced minimal morning sickness, our doctor’s visits were great, and all the ultrasounds came back normal. We were attending weekly birthing classes and Maureen was very conscious of her diet and strictly followed all of her doctor’s instructions. So, when we noticed signs that her water broke the night of the March 22nd, we were terrified and confused. We called the hospital and they told us to come in. The doctor confirmed our worst fear… this baby would have to be delivered early.

The plan was to keep Maureen in the hospital for nearly eight weeks so that she could deliver at 34 weeks. That was the best case scenario, but of course things didn’t go accordingly. He came just four days later on Thursday, March 26th. Nathan was born at 26 weeks and 3 days gestation. He weighed 1lb 12oz.

We spent the next 81 days in the NICU.

On the day he was born, I was able to go see him. They said I could take pictures. They took me to the nurses’ station by the entrance of the NICU and asked me to clean my phone with a Neotech Cell Wipe and place in a Cell Shield. That was my first encounter with one of our products, but certainly not my last.

When I saw Nathan for the first time, he was already using NeoBar, Micro NeoLead, and Hold-A-Line. During his stay in the NICU, he also benefitted from NeoShades, Little Sucker, Suction Caddy, RAM Cannula, NeoBond, and EZ-Hold.

Premature in the Time of COVID

Giving birth to a preemie is a life-altering event in itself, but to have a baby prematurely during COVID-19 was extremely challenging. We were admitted to the hospital shortly after CA implemented the lock down. The hospital put new visitation restrictions in place which allowed only one parent to visit once per day. Maureen and I were not allowed to visit Nathan together in the NICU. The hospital closed off all waiting rooms and implemented a screening procedure and temperature checks at the front entrance. The only departments allowing one visitor was Labor & Delivery, Hospice, and the NICU.

Despite the challenges, the doctors and nursing staff at Kaiser, Panorama City were amazing. We were so fortunate to be under the care of the Chief Neonatologist, Dr. Marie Villosis. Dr. Villosis coincidentally trained under Dr. Ramanathan, who helped create the Neotech RAM Cannula. Dr. Villosis was always very informative regarding Nathan’s care and would take the time to thoroughly explain any procedures or conditions he would have to undergo.

This was definitely the longest 80+ days of our lives. The roller coaster of emotions that we experienced was quite overwhelming at times. Seeing Nathan being supported by machines and not knowing if he’d be ok was heart wrenching. Every time he would overcome a hurdle, there would be another one waiting around the corner.

True Faith

Maureen and I know for sure that we could not have gotten through this without our faith in God and the prayers and support of our family and friends. Even though the pandemic prevented loved ones from visiting us, we received phone calls, text messages, emails and FaceTime calls that definitely helped us get through it.

We count our blessings every day and are grateful for the progress Nathan has made. As of this writing, he weighs almost 10lbs and is 22 inches tall. I am also grateful to Neotech for the products we make that improve the lives of babies all over the world. I know firsthand that we at Neotech truly make a difference.

Lastly, we’d like to personally like to thank our entire Neotech family, with a special shoutout to Craig and Judy McCrary, for surrounding us with love and support during our entire NICU journey.

Family Conveys Appreciation for Sasha Ramini

Sasha is a Nurse Practitioner and Neotech Clinical Consultant who is making a difference! For both her patients and their families.

Sasha Ramini (left, with fellow consultant, Terri Lichtel) would never share a letter that sang her praises. Fortunately, her husband would. “One of her favorite families sent a letter in about Sasha taking care of their daughter,” he wrote. “I know y’all see Sasha at work in her Neotech world, but thought y’all would appreciate reading about her work at Children’s. I’m just proud of her and wanted to share!”

Letter from a Parent

It’s difficult to put into words the enormity of a childhood cancer diagnosis. Difficult to explain the experience of being a patient and a parent on the receiving end of the words… “It’s malignant.” Initially your mind is thrown into a tailspin of questions, disbelief, and a complete lack of direction. You’re left feeling completely helpless.

Thinking back to our day, before hearing those life altering words, I know I drove my SUV into the parking deck. I know I parked on level 2. I know I walked down the hall to the clinic 8 and made my way to an exam room. But after, I couldn’t have found my way out of that clinic if my life depended on it. I was lost. WE were lost, and we needed help.

Our help came. Her name was Sasha Ramini. She was our compass, our truth North in those days and weeks to follow. I’ve never seen someone fight so fiercely for a child that was not their own. She embraced our entire family and walked beside us through the most difficult time of our lives. Sasha was not just fighting against a disease; she was fighting FOR Kelsie.

Trips to clinic were never dreaded because Kelsie knew she’d be seeing Sasha. Always smiling, always filling up every room she entered with her huge personality. She proved herself to be a woman that loved big and was relentless in her work for the children in her care.

Sometimes people come into our lives and they just fit. Like they’ve always been there. Sasha definitely felt like that to Kelsie. To all of us. She was the piece to our story we didn’t know we needed.

I feel like there are times when it’s about more than just the medicine. There’s another link to the healing process that maybe gets overlooked. I believe that part is connection, compassion, genuine concern. I’m sure in the medical profession it’s easy to grow numb in the attempt to guard your heart from the constant bombardment of bad news. I can imagine that the weight of that alone could be crushing. Sasha Ramini however has somehow managed to balance that. To make it look easy even. And she has done it brilliantly.

She would hate it if I went on and on about how she went above and beyond for our family. Truth is, it was never a matter of going above and beyond for her. It was just Sasha being Sasha. It’s just who she is. An amazing navigator. And an even more amazing cheerleader.

We are honored to call her our friend.

Clinical Consultant

Sasha joined our clinical consultant team in 2010. The group is an extremely valuable extension of the Neotech family. We’ve partnered with these amazing clinicians to offer product insight and in-service training to our customers. But their first job is in the hospital, providing exceptional care for their patients.

Sasha is a Nurse Practitioner in pediatric neuro-oncology. She has worked as an RN in the pediatric ICU and she is the inventor of the Little Sucker Cover.

“Our RRTs and RNs would remove the plunger from a syringe and shove the Sucker in it to protect it from contamination,” Sasha said. “It was that concept that led me to email [Neotech] to begin the process of creating some type of cover for the Little Sucker.”

It was that development interaction that led to Sasha joining our clinical consultant team. We’re extremely fortunate to have her on board. We’re very proud to know that she’s making a difference; not just for us, but for her patients. And we too are honored to call her our friend.

Recent Upgrades & Updates

2019 was filled with company-wide changes that kept the Neotech Operations team plenty busy.

Whether it’s product improvements, system improvements, or operation improvements, Neotech is always striving for better. We began early in the year with first-floor construction. Reconfiguring some inefficiently used office space allowed the Neotech Operations heads to move into one central office space. Which led to improved communication and efficiency. Purchasing, Production, and Warehouse can now meet to discuss daily topics in the same area.

The project also opened up space on the 2nd floor for the Sales & Marketing team to grow as needed. And with all of the orders coming in, growth is inevitable.

System Upgrades

Last year, Neotech made the jump to new shipping software. This new software enabled our shipping team to consolidate both FedEx and UPS onto one platform. Shippers no longer have to select which carrier to use. As a result, shipments are processed faster and errors are minimized. The software also integrates with our current accounting program.

Neotech Operations also implemented a new inventory management software. We had been relying on the accounting software to also manage our inventory for almost 20 years. However, we realized it could no longer satisfy all of our order entry and inventory needs. The new software has a more robust inventory management system which helps alleviate many of the shortcomings we were faced with. Which equals higher efficiency and accuracy.

Energy Efficiency

Speaking of efficiency, Neotech Operations replaced all existing office, warehouse, and exterior lighting with all new fixtures and LED bulbs in 2019. The new lighting has made a huge difference visually and is significantly better for the environment. The project is also expected to yield significant savings for the company.

When we moved into our Witherspoon building, we were blessed with the original heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units. Units that were over 20 years old. The stark reality of needed replacements was pushed to the forefront when the fire department was dispatched due to a burned out motor. It was quite an endeavor, but we have all new HVAC units working properly and much more efficiently.

“Expanding” the Warehouse

Thirty thousand square feet offers a lot of warehouse space. Yet it can get crowded much quicker than you think. Fortunately you can expand upward. In September, we installed newly-acquired pallet racks. The project was an initiative to maximize and organize warehouse space. Now we can store products and material vertically rather than taking up space on the floor. Which makes it even easier to move around and get to what we need.

We also added an automatic pallet wrapper. We have several pallets a day that need to be shrink-wrapped. This is something we had done manually since day one, but an employee’s physical restriction finally prompted the purchase of the machine. The Warehouse team no longer needs to perform the “dizzying” practice of manually wrapping a pallet.

These were some pretty significant items, activities, and projects completed by the Neotech Operations department in 2019. And it all happened while keeping up with production and fulfilling orders with incredible accuracy. Neil has created a great team and the efforts of the entire group are greatly appreciated.

The New Neotech Continues to Evolve

Made in USA! That’s been Neotech’s guiding principle from the beginning. It was and continues to be our mission to support U.S. businesses, U.S. jobs, and local economies. We pride ourselves on it.

In an ever-changing landscape, however, it became apparent that “made in USA” may not always be feasible. Some components may prove cost prohibitive. For one such component, we explored every which way to manufacture it in the U.S. Including changing the design. Despite our efforts, we simply couldn’t get the price low enough for resale.

The options? Explore other avenues or don’t offer the product. We chose to explore other avenues.

To keep our options open, we met with a manufacturer located in San Mateo Atenco, Mexico. The company has an impeccable reputation and nearly 30 years of experience. Like Neotech, they comply with FDA and ISO standards (ISO 9001:2015 Certified).

Our design engineering firm, Zewski, Corp., sent one of their team members to tour the facility. Daniel Saldana was on sight to oversee the initial manufacturing process. He was able to witness the injection molding, inspect samples, provide feedback, and brainstorm ideas for improved efficiency.

“Aside from being highly professional in their approach, everyone at the company was incredibly friendly,” Saldana said. “They were eager to help us in making a difference in the lives of patients around the world. Their capabilities range from tooling design to injection molding and they worked with us to choose the best medical grade materials available.”

Products to Market

Some ideas are met with such enthusiasm that we feel a certain obligation to bring them to market. Or at least make every effort. After all, a simple yet versatile product can make a big difference in all areas of the hospital. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as releasing a product. We also have to offer it at a price the market can bear.

“We were facing the prospect of abandoning a great product due to the manufacturing cost,” Craig McCrary, President, said. “If we truly believed the product would make a difference, then we needed to find a way to produce it. Luckily, we found the perfect vendor to help us do so. We partnered with a reputable company with the same high-quality standards that we have.

“Given our history of ‘made in the USA,” McCrary continued, “it was not an easy decision. But we feel it’s the right one.”

Manufacturing in Mexico may be the right choice for certain products or components moving forward. For the more than 20 product lines currently made in the U.S., we’re keeping it that way. And as new products come down the pipeline, the mission remains the same:

To produce high-quality medical products—manufactured to the highest industry standards—that Make a Difference in the quality of treatment for medically dependent neonates and children, and the caregivers who treat them.

Preferably in the U.S., but elsewhere if necessary to bring you the product you deserve.

Update: All Neotech products are shipped from the United States. The NeoGlo Sleeve (N55100) and Cell Shield (N15200) are produced by a U.S.-based vendor, but use materials sourced in Shenzhen City, China.
